Fishing & Angling

While the name "Faroe Islands" translates to "the sheep islands," the ocean has sustained the Faroese people for centuries. With fishing as the backbone of the Faroese economy, it’s no wonder the islands are synonymous with the sea and all it offers.

Fishing in Suðuroy is more than just a pastime—it’s a chance to connect with the island’s maritime heritage while soaking in the fresh sea breeze, stunning ocean views, and the peaceful ambience of nature. And as a bonus, you can catch your own dinner to enjoy the freshest fish imaginable!

Why Fish in Suðuroy?
One of the best things about fishing here is the freedom. You can cast your line nearly anywhere without requiring a permit. However, as with all activities in nature, it’s essential to:

  • Take the necessary precautions to ensure safety.
  • Respect the locals and the natural surroundings to preserve the beauty and harmony of the island.

Practical Information for Anglers

Anglers visiting Suðuroy and the Faroe Islands are not required to provide a veterinary certificate for cleaning and disinfecting fishing equipment. However, all fishing gear—including rods, reels, rubber waders, and lures—must be disinfected before arriving to eliminate any potential fish pathogens.

For more details, read Disinfection of Fishing Equipment.

Important Notice: Preventing the Spread of IHN

The fish disease Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis (IHN) has been detected in several countries, including Denmark and Finland. While the Faroe Islands remain IHN-free, the disease poses a significant risk if contaminated fishing gear is brought into the country.

To protect the islands:

1. Ensure all fishing equipment—such as rods, rubber boots, and waders—is thoroughly washed and disinfected before traveling.

2. Follow local guidelines and recommendations to prevent any accidental transmission of pathogens.

By taking these precautions, you help safeguard the pristine marine environment of the Faroe Islands for generations to come.
