Church of Elduvík
a classic wooden church inspired by traditional Faroese churches
On January 20, 1947, the people of Elduvík gathered in the village school and agreed to begin the construction of a church. A committee was appointed, with Pastor Salomon Joensen as chairman, to oversee the project.
The architect, H.C.W. Tórgarð, was asked to create a draft design. In collaboration with him, the committee decided that the old wooden churches would serve as a model, but with modern adaptations as necessary.
On October 4, 1947, the church committee sent a letter to the Faroese Parliament (Løgting). The letter referred to drawings and a cost estimate from H.C.W. Tórgarð. It stated that the committee had been granted permission to raise funds from October 7 to 21. Furthermore, it was mentioned that the villagers were willing to carry out all excavation work, transport sand and timber, procure stones, transport them to the site, and complete all concrete work free of charge.
In a letter to the Parliament on July 17, 1948, it was reported that the foundation had been excavated, and sand and stones had been gathered at the site.
All foundation work was completed by the spring of 1950, and the timber materials had been delivered. Jákup Garðshorn oversaw these tasks.
The construction work was carried out by Heine Eldevig (known as "Lítli Heini") from Niðara Nýggjustova in Elduvík and Martin Nónskarð (formerly Eldevig), who was also from Elduvík. Heine and Martin were cousins and renowned craftsmen.
On July 27, 1951, the church committee in Elduvík sent a letter to Færøernes Kirkeinspektion informing them that the church was nearly completed. One reason for the long construction period was the difficulty of acquiring timber.
The church was consecrated on Sunday, October 14, 1951.
