We often hear in the media that the Greenland ice sheet is melting and that a total melting can ultimately lead to a global rise in sea level of up to 7 m. But what do we really know about the Inland Ice? How long has it been around? What is basically hiding under the ice? And how sensitive is the ice to climate variations? These are some of the questions you will be given during the lecture.
You will also gain insight into when the ice sheet was formed and how Greenland looked before the ice came. Also hear about how the Inland Ice has changed Greenland’s landscape and formed some of the world’s most spectacular fjord systems. In order to uncover the ability of ice to shape landscapes, researchers utilize, among other things, that elemental particles from supernovae and the Big Bang create new isotopes in the Greenland bedrock.
In recent years, researchers have uncovered what secrets are hiding under the ice sheet. they have found meteor craters and channels the size of the Grand Canyon. The findings of the meteor crates are so new that the investigations have not yet been completed. During the lecture you will hear about how the work on dating the meteor crates is progressing as well as what effect the meteor strikes may have had on the climate of the time.
Finally, hear about how global warming is affecting the ice sheet today, and what the future holds – does the ice sheet survive or is it doomed?
