Gentukostdeildin
A historic building in Hoydalar, now home to art and creative activities
Gentukostdeildin forms part of the historic area of Hoydalar. A tuberculosis sanatorium opened here in 1908, at a time when tuberculosis was a serious infectious disease in the Faroe Islands. Its location outside the town at the time and the fresh air were important features of the sanatorium. Before effective medical treatment became available, rest, nutritious food and plenty of fresh air were common elements of sanatorium treatment.
Hoydalar later became home to the Faroese upper secondary school, and Gentukostdeildin served as accommodation for female students who came from villages around the Faroe Islands to study. The building was later used for school activities, including music.
Today, the building has taken on a new role as a setting for art and creative activities, with work and studio spaces for artists. Gentukostdeildin thus reflects several chapters in the history of Hoydalar, from the hospital era to student life and, more recently, art and culture.
