Hoydalar
A historic green area with culture and popular walking trails
Hoydalar is a historic green area near Tórshavn where nature meets several chapters of Faroese social history. In 1908, the oldest building in the complex was built as a tuberculosis hospital, commonly known as the Sanatorium. The area later became home to Føroya Studentaskúli og HF-skeið, which moved to Hoydalar in 1962.
For decades, student life shaped the character of Hoydalar, until teaching moved away from the site in 2018. Today, Hoydalar is also a popular recreational area. Its paths are widely used for walking and cycling, with routes continuing towards Yviri við Strond. The green surroundings make it a pleasant place to stop for an ice cream, and the area regularly provides a setting for different events.
