Húsini við Brunn village museum
Step inside a historic Nólsoy home dating back to the 17th century
The oldest part of Húsini við Brunn is the traditional smoke room, built from driftwood in the late 17th century. The eastern part of the house was added by Gamli Jáki in 1828 using a single log of Pomeranian pine bought at an auction following the shipwreck known as Saksunarskipið. He towed the log to Nólsoy himself, a journey that took 18 hours.
The house was once considered one of the finer homes in the village and often welcomed visitors to Nólsoy. When King Frederik VIII of Denmark visited the island in 1907 and wanted to see a traditional byre, he was invited to Brunn, as its byre was considered the best in the village.
The same family has lived at Brunn for more than 300 years. Today, the house is a village museum with a diverse collection of historical objects telling stories about the house, its inhabitants, everyday life in Nólsoy and the wider world.
Húsini við Brunn is maintained by Nólsoyar Forminnisfelag and is open by appointment through Visit Nólsoy. Contact +298 52 70 60 or info@nolsoy.fo.
