Sandur Village Museum
Step inside an old Faroese home and discover life in earlier times
Sandur Village Museum is located in Norðara Koyta, an old settlement where records show that people lived as early as 1584. The house that is now home to the museum was built by Hanus Jóhannesarson, later known as Hanus í Koytu, who settled there in 1812.
The museum acquired the house in 1988 and began restoring it. Today, it offers a glimpse into what an ordinary Faroese home looked like and how people lived in earlier times.
Sandur has a long history of settlement. Archaeological excavations by the graveyard, á Sondum and at Junkarinsfløttur show that people lived in the area in the 10th century. Near the graveyard are also remains of what archaeologists believe to have been a longhouse, as well as graves and a coin hoard.
