On December 31, volunteers work on decorating the town, among other, erecting two gates, placing petrol cans along the mountain road, that leads to Eggjarnar viewpoint. A decorated boat is placed at the Triangle.

The history - briefly

In the 1960s, a group of young locals set out to organise a New Year‘s Eve celebration in Vágur. The intention was to establish a tradition in Vágur that would unite locals and people affiliated with the town on New Year‘s Eve – every year onwards.

The New Year‘s Eve celebration includes a torchlight procession, fireworks, and bonfire that unfold at this place called the Triangle (Tríkanturin). Until the 1950s, a local company used the Triangle to dry fish. Therefore, the historical importance of this place continues with the New Year‘s Eve celebration.

In connection with the new Millennium (the year 2000), the Triangle was renovated and two statues, created by local entrepreneurs, erected, becoming an ornament for the town. Coupled with tradition, festivity, and cohesion, the two statues and the Triangle encapture New Year‘s Eve in Vágur.

Throughout the years, the New Year‘s Eve celebration in Vágur has evolved to a spectacular - one that cannot be experienced elsewhere.

Locals and visitors meet up for a community breakfast. A kids entertainment show is arranged. The local running club has its last run of the year, and a mountain hike is organised. Small gatherings, bonfires and firework shows happen at the various neighborhoods. At midnight the  torchlight procession begins. At the Triangle, the large bonfire takes place, so does the spectacular firework show. Later in the night, music concerts and community dances are arranged.
